Samsung shows sequels to Galaxy Ace and Mini

This time Samsung is getting a head start on next week's wireless trade show by announcing the Galaxy Mini 2 and Galaxy Ace 2. Though we heard rumors of the Mini 2 last week, Samsung waited until early Tuesday morning to make the handsets official in a press release from the company's Korean headquarters.

As if the "2" in their names wasn't a dead giveaway, both phones are sequels to the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Mini that we saw last year at Mobile World Congress (the recent Galaxy S Plus is another member of the family). That means of course, that both devices offer entry-level features and simple compact designs.

The Galaxy Ace 2 has a 3.8-inch WVGA display, an 800MHz processor, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), a 5-megapixel camera, a second VGA shooter around front, a digital music player, a microSD card slot, 4GB of internal memory, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, GPS, and Samsung's TouchWiz interface. For connectivity, it supports all four GSM bands plus HSDPA for data.

The Galaxy Mini 2 also has an 800MHz processor and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), but its features are scaled down just a bit. There's a 3.27-inch HVGA display, a 3-megapixel camera, a digital music player, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, a microSD card slot, and 4GB of internal memory. It has TouchWiz, as well, and it's a quadband world phone with HSDPA support.

The Ace 2 will be available in the United Kingdom starting in April while the Mini 2 will hit France next month with a global release to follow. Samsung did not reveal pricing at the time of this writing.

We've no doubt that Samsung will show off the phones when Mobile World Congress begins next Monday in Barcelona, Spain. CNET will be there to bring you details on Sammy's other announcements plus hands-on impressions.

Samsung tilts at the iPad 3 with scheduled product launch

After months of court wrangles with Apple, Samsung still can't resist poking the bear by launching its 2012 range on March 6, the day before Apple's much-rumored iPad 3 announcement.

Samsung will officially launch its range of 2012 televisions at an event in New York and is expected provide more details on one of the most impressive entrants at this year's CES, the 55-inch "Super OLED" TV. (Update: Samsung tells us the OLED TV won't be announced at that event; availability is still said to be the second half of 2012.)

The company will also outline its take on gesture control and the latest Smart TV apps.

Other products on display at the March event will be home cinema and the company's newest camera range.

Though an Apple iPad 3 is still theoretical, the latest rumors suggest a new device will be announced on an as-yet-unconfirmed date of March 7.

Last week, a German court cleared the Samsung Galaxy Tab for sale in the country after Apple filed an injunction last year preventing the 10-inch tablet from entering the nation'sborders.

Samsung launches Galaxy Tab 2 tablet with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Not content with having two other tablets in the 7-inch class category, Samsung has taken the wraps off of the Galaxy Tab 2, the true successor to the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab that was released way back in 2010. The Galaxy Tab 2 features a dual-core processor and is the first Samsung tablet to launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Galaxy Tab 2 has the same 7-inch, 1024 x 600 pixel displays as the original Galaxy Tab, but the internals have been beefed up with a dual-core 1GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. Owners of the original will also be familiar with the 3 megapixel rear facing camera and VGA front-facing camera found on the Galaxy Tab 2. The Galaxy Tab 2's dimensions measure 193.7mm x 122.4mm x 10.5mm (7.63in x 4.82in x 0.41), which makes it a bit more trim than the original, but nowhere near as svelte as the Galaxy Tab 7.7's. The Galaxy Tab 2 weighs 344g (12.13oz) and is fueled by a 4,000mAh battery.

As mentioned, the Galaxy Tab 2 will launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board. It also includes Samsung's full suite of hubs for Music, Reading, and Games, and has the company's new Video hub with over 1,000 movies available for rent or purchase.

Samsung plans to offer the Galaxy Tab 2 with either 8, 16, or 32GB of internal storage and in Wi-Fi-only and HSPA+ versions. The Galaxy Tab 2 will be launched first in the UK in March and later throughout Europe, though exact release dates and pricing have not yet been revealed. There has been no mention of a North American launch so far.
